The Books

Soon after the broadcast of the first series, Douglas was approached by Pan Books to turn Hitchhiker's into a book. He did, but very slowly. Eventually the publishers told him to finish the page he was on, and sent a bike round to pick it up.

The plot of the first book is similar to that of the first radio series, but finishes as the Heart of Gold leaves Magrathea, heading for the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went straight to Number One in the UK Bestseller List and in 1984 Douglas Adams became the youngest author to be awarded a Golden Pan. He was also nominated for the first Best of Young British Novelists awards.
