Star Trek Masterplan

Star Trek Masterplan

Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) is to star in a production of Ibsen's The Master Builder in London's West End, thanks to a chance encounter on Star Trek: Nemesis.

On BBC Radio 2's Parkinson Show, Patrick Stewart revealed that he first considered the play when Star Trek: Nemesis scribe John Logan asked him if he'd like to work on a film version. Co-incidentally, producer Douglas Wheldon contacted him shortly afterwards about a stage run.

"Two different people, on two different continents, talking about the same, relatively obscure, Ibsen play, spoke to me," Stewart told Parky . "So I went out and bought a copy. I didn't have a copy! I committed to it right away."

Stewart also recalled the reasons behind his decision to return to the stage. "The decision to make the change happened a couple of years ago, when as far as film and television was concerned, I couldn't have been busier... to be truly happy, I needed to rebalance my life.

"I didn't become an actor to work in front of a camera. All that was a bonus that I stumbled over. It's being on a stage, in front of an audience, eight times a week, following that routine, and hopefully in a great piece of work as well, with a wonderful company."

The Master Builder opens at the Albery Theatre in London's West End on 18th June. Previews from 12th June. Do not wear Trek costumes to it, our Patrick won't be pleased.
