Failing Enterprise

Star Trek's latest incarnation faces an uncertain future.

Comments by CBS chairman Leslie Moonves, responsible for the UPN network which makes Enterprise, have cast doubt on the survival of the latest Trek series.

Speaking at a news conference, Moonves said that Enterprise could be dropped from the network in the next few months. "You see the new stuff, you see the old stuff, and you compare and say, 'What is the better schedule?'

"So it's not like, 'Gee, if Enterprise is up 10 percent between now and May, it will get picked up.' It's rather - you know, it's not a science, but it's, 'All right. How do we build Wednesday better?' 'Does it include Enterprise?' Very possibly. 'Does it not?' Possibly as well."

Currently in its third season, Enterprise has recently added the words Star Trek to its title, and the series' producers have concentrated on more action-packed stories. So far, though, ratings have failed to improve, and even if the series isn't cancelled, it faces a move to an unrewarding Friday night slot.

Coming on top of last Friday's shock Angel cancellation, and today's news that six-million nanite man series Jake 2.0 has been junked, this is fast turning into TV sci fi's blackest week.
