More Monkey magic

Lost episodes of cult 70s Japanese show found.

Fans of 70s fantasy show Monkey rejoice! Thirteen "lost" episodes of the cult Japanese series have been unearthed and are being readied for broadcast.

English actors David Collings and Andrew Sachs, who provided English voiceover work on the series back in the 70s will be returning to dub the characters Yu-Lung and Monkey.

The actors had never actually met when they worked on the series in the late seventies. The voiceovers were recorded separately in a studio in London's Soho. They were reunited on BBC's Breakfast Show on Monday 29th March to discuss the return of the series.

David Collings said: "We had to put on cod Japanese accents... I thought it would be a bit strange but it seemed to work."

Monkey told the surreal story of the boy priest Tripitaka's quest to retreive ancient Buddhist texts. The journey involved encounters with many perilous creatures, and protection for Tripitaka came in the form of animal spirits Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy.

"Kids from the 70s still remember it as their favourite programme," said Sachs.

It is hoped that Channel 4 will screen the thirteen missing episodes later in the year.
