New Holmes and Watson

Fry and Laurie to play the sleuthing duo.

Comedic double act Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie are to play Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in a new one-off drama for ITV1.

Sherlock fan Fry will play the pipe-smoking Victorian detective, with Laurie as his loyal sidekick Watson.

ITV has not yet confirmed the production but Fry and Laurie are widely known to have accepted the roles.

Speaking to The Daily Mirror, ITV1's Nick Elliott said: "Stephen is absolutely passionate about Sherlock Holmes and Hugh will make a superb Watson."

The channel hopes to screen the £2m film in 2005, but has yet to finalise contractual details.
