BBC Two at forty
The trendy channel hits middle age.
In a flurry of power cuts and technical troubles, BBC Two launched on 20th April 1964.
To celebrate this anniversary, we've put together a site all about the trendy channel that gave us Playschool, Horizon and late night tetchy Germaine Greer.
Our site's got video clips and pictures of the fabulous "2" idents, a clip of the launch night, and the first week's schedule from the Radio Times (which is weirdly fascinating, as well as laugh-out-loud funny).
BBC2's anniversary is also celebrated in Happy Birthday BBC TWO, a programme going out tonight which takes a look at the people and programmes that have made the channel what it is today. Plenty of behind-the-scenes stories, and sketches from the Dead Ringers team, are promised.
