Summer in the Sixties
BBC Four season celebrates the swinging decade.
From 5th June to 2nd July, BBC Four is celebrating the Sixties with a wealth of programming that offers a feast of documentaries, music, cinema, archive programming and discussion. As well as a pure nostalgia-fest, the season also offers a number of treats for cult TV fans.
As previously announced, an undoubted highlight is the screening by the channel of the whole of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan's classic 'world gone mad' drama, originally screened in 1967 and 1968. The Prisoner will be shown in double bills on Fridays at 11pm, starting on 11th June 2004. Look out for more on The Prisoner on the Cult site soon.
In Fantasy Sixties Timeshift looks at how and why the Sixties were a boom time for fantasy and science fiction. Expect a certain Time Lord to make an appearance...
Mark Lawson challenges the notion of the Sixties as the golden age of television in The Truth about Sixties TV.
And in Round the Horne... Revisited, one of the great Sixties comedy series comes to TV for the first time in an exclusive version of the hit stage show.
Other highlights include a Timeshift look at The Magic Roundabout and another chance to see the Alchemists of Sound, which looks at the pioneering work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
The work of Nigel Kneale will also be celebrated in The Kneale Tapes and a screening of his controversial drama The Year of the Sex Olympics.
