Hitchhiker's US hit

The Hitchhiker's film is the America's most popular film.

The film, starring Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, went straight in at number one, taking $21.7m (£14.2m) in its opening three days.

Hitchhiker's beat sequel XXX: State of the Union, which entered the US top ten at number three, with The Interpreter slipping from the top spot to number two.

Disney executive Chuck Viane offered this insight into why he thinks the film has been a hit with viewers:

"It's totally fresh and unlike anything in the marketplace right now."
