Episode Guide - Synopses of all the dark doings in Strange.
John Strange
(Richard Coyle)
John Strange is a former Priest, who has been dismissed from the clergy under mysterious circumstances. During our first encounter with Strange we discover that he was implicated in a number of gruesome murders in the area, murders that he proclaims are the work of demons
Housed by the Bishop in the Cathedral grounds, Strange has undertaken to seek out those responsible and clear his name. This mission puts him into direct conflict with Canon Black, who seems intent on denying any acknowledgement of dark forces in his diocese.
After the disappearance of the Demonica Diablo, a categorical listing of every Demon that walks the earth, Strange has been forced to fall back on other sources for his research. Fortunately Jude, Kevin and Toby are on hand.
A quiet and earnest figure, Strange seems a bit cold to Jude at first, but a working relationship based on trust and a mutual understanding is soon forged.
Richard Coyle is famous for playing Jeff in the BBC2 sitcom Coupling. He played John Ridd in an ITV production of Lorne Doone and last year starred opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Proof at London's Donmar Warehouse.
Jude
(Samantha Janus)
A nurse at the local hospital, Jude's involvement in investigating demons came about when she discovered that her partner Rich was a Demon. With Rich dead, her chief concern is that the son they had together, Joey, could also be a demon.
With her own agenda for uncovering the truth, Jude joins forces with Strange, but far from a hindrance, she proves invaluable in their investigations. It transpires that Jude used to be a scientific researcher and that she gave it up at Rich's behest. With his death, Jude relishes the chance to put these dormant skills to good use.
Samantha Janus is best known for her role as Mandy Wilkins in the BBC2 sitcom Game On! Samantha Janus has also starred in Pie in the Sky and Babes in the Wood. She came tenth in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest.
Cannon Adolphus Black
(Ian Richardson)
"Jesus Christ!" Cannon Adolphus Black isn't your typical priest.
Black's exact purpose is unknown. We do know that he was ultimately responsible for Strange's dismissal from the clergy, but we do not know his reasons.
Supposedly in charge of a cathedral somewhere in England, his true purpose in unknown. Black seems to be cold and calculating and insensitive to the feelings of others. He also possesses a truly devilish sense of humour.
Ian Richardson's credits are too numerous to mention, but he is probably best known for his role as Francis Urqhurt in The House of Cards and To Play the King. He was also memorable in Gormenghast, The Magician's House and Murder Rooms.
Toby
(Andrew Lee-Potts)
Toby is technological wiz who is in charge of the equipment Strange uses to sense the presence of demons.
He's also something of an internet wizard and Strange has channelled his talents away from amending credit ratings to finding information about various demons, information that Strange hoped to get from the Demonica Diablo, the ancient tome that they have failed to acquire.
Toby's life away from working for Strange is shrouded in mystery - we do not know what his day job is, for example. His hobbies, drinking, and his 'lads-mag' sense of humour, suggest he is living the life of a perennial student, however.
Andrew Lee-Potts has appeared in numerous television series including Emmerdale, Heartbeat and Children's Ward. He also played Private Jackson in an episode of the Steven Spielberg produced mini-series Band of Brothers.
Kevin
(Timmy Lang)
Kevin works as Cannon Black's gardener, a job that enables him to spy on the Canon and find out vital information as he peeps through the windows, pruning the hedges.
Because Kevin has Downes Syndrome, the Cannon doesn't even conceive he could possibly pass on information, making Kevin both invisible and invaluable.
Like a blind person who has developed an enhanced sense of hearing, Kevin can sense the presence of demons and is often an early warning that something devilish is about to happen in the vicinity.
Timmy Lang played Russell in the episode of Peak Practice, Walls of Jericho and Billy Conrad in the episode A Touch of Frost, Appropriate Adults.
Doddington
(Samuel Barnett)
Doddington is Canon Black's curate, but his job description seems to extend beyond being the Canon's secretary to be being his general dogsbody - Whenever we see him he seems to be performing secret deeds for the Canon, or off to the Church Social Club.
Doddington appears somewhat weak-willed, which is probably why Black hired him in the first place and is often the butt of Black's dismissive put-downs.
The pilot of Strange marked Samuel Barnett's television debut. He has since played Brian Byrne in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries episode Well Schooled in Murder.
