Falcon's crest?
I found this picture pinned to the Ludlow's map, in the area of the Tower of London.
I think that, thanks to your fantastic help, we seem to have solved the clue. The falcon crest is the Coat of arms of Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.
The symbols of heraldry:
- Falcon = One who does not rest until objective achieved
- Crown = Defender of a fortress
- Candle = Light, life, and spirituality
- Flower = Hope and joy
- The colour blue = Truth and loyalty
- Standing on a gold roundel = Worthy of trust
- The fire or flames = Zealousness
Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn was reputed to have six fingers on her left hand. This was seen as the Devil's mark at the time, and when Henry VIII wanted to get shot of her, he trumped up some witchcraft charges to go along with the confessions of her 'lovers'; extracted under torture of course. She was also rumoured to have a large mole or goitre on her neck.
The Boleyns were a powerful clan from the emergent middle class, who set their sights on the monarchy. Both Anne and her cousin, Catherine Howard, seduced the King of England into marriage, and while seducing Henry VIII was easy, getting him to marry them wasn't. Of course, it killed them both.
Anne was executed on the 19th of May 1536 on Tower Green. She was buried in an old arrow box since no coffin was provided. But the box was too short; her head was tucked beside her. The remains were taken to St Peter ad Vincula, the church of the Tower of London.
It was later rumoured that her few remaining friends smuggled her body to a more suitable grave and she is now buried under a plain slab in a Norfolk church. The church is said to be haunted. But another rumour states that her body was one that was found during renovations of the Tower's chapel under the reign of Queen Victoria, so Anne's final resting place is now marked in the marble floor of the chapel.
Most of the ghostly tales from The Tower can be attributed to Anne Boleyn too. Her ghost has been seen at both the White Tower and at Tower Green and her former prison cell was the scene of a strange visitation, witnessed by one Mr Edward Swifte, Keeper of the Jewels, back in 1817. A strange cylinder of glowing liquid materialised in the room and moved around the place, until Mr Swifte swung a chair at it.
Probably sensing hostility, the cylinder vanished. Guards have even had court martial hearings dropped, after it was discovered that their reason for leaving their post was due to the fact that Anne Boleyn kept hanging around, minus her head, which understandably made the Yeomen nervous. These stories were often backed-up by other sentries. One particular individual, Field-Marshall Lord Grenfell, (who was a Member of The Ghost Club), had an experience very similar to this while stationed there as a young Lieutenant.
Her spirit is also said to cast an 'unearthly' light from one of The Tower's many chapels, but this particular haunting has also been applied to the ghost of Henry VI, who's penitent spectre is said to reside there. Even the sound of footsteps have been associated to Anne Boleyn.
I think we are done with this clue, but if you have any other ghost stories connected to the Tower of London, see what we have discovered on the Tower of London map pages, and post any additional info you may have on my on my message board.
