Budget Statement Titles

In recent years it has become customary for Chancellors to give titles to their budgets.

Sir Geoffrey Howe (1979 - 1983)

1979 - An Opportunity Budget.
1980 - A Budget to do what is necessary.
1983 - A Budget for Britain's continuing recovery.

Nigel Lawson (1983 - 1989)

1987 - A Budget for Success.
1988 - A Tax Reform Budget.

John Major (1989 - 1990)

1990 - A Budget for Savers.

Norman Lamont (1990 - 1993)

1992 - A Budget for the Recovery.
1993 (March) - A Budget for sustained recovery and a budget for jobs.

Kenneth Clarke (1993 - )

1993 (November) - The Budget of a Responsible Government.
1994 - A Budget for Jobs
1996 - A Budget for Lasting Prosperity

In 1995 the Budget was not given a title. It was said that the Budget was to allow people to keep what they earn and to spend only on what people care about.
