Constituency Description
Uxbridge is a reasonably well-off town and constituency. The seat has one of
the highest levels of full-time employment in the country and unemployment is
low for London at just 3.7%. Nearly three-quarters of householders are
owner-occupiers, with a trend for those in council houses to buy their
properties. The seat is largely middle class; over 90% of the population is
white, and over 80% economically active (of whom just under 70% work full time
- the 8th highest level in the country). The seat contains Brunel University,
Harefield heart transplant hospital, a Jacobean mansion at Ickenham and a ski
centre. The Battle of Britain was largely directed from an underground control
centre at RAF Uxbridge.
If Labour wins the by-election, it will be the first time a governing party has
gained a by-election since the Conservatives in Merton, Mitcham and Morden on
June 3 1982.
If the Conservatives hold the seat, it will be the first time the party has
held a seat in a by-election since William Hague won Richmond in 1989.
