Poll trends 1985-1996
Herald/System Three and ICM
Sample size for all of these polls was around 1000 respondents.
These tables show trends in support for devolution since 1985 within Scotland. There is very little data from the period between 1979 and 1985 as there was little media interest in the issue. System Three changed their question in the middle of 1996 to make it similar to the one which will be on the ballot paper for the referendum. Previously, respondents were given the choice between independence, devolution and the status quo.
The polls suggest little dramatic shift in opinion over the past decade - a devolved Scottish parliament remains the most favoured option, with independence second and the status quo the third most popular constitutional position.
Question: Do you want:
a completely independent Scottish Parliament separate from England (changed to "A completely independent Scotland" in 1996)
a Scottish Parliament with substantial powers, but within the framework of British government
no change from the present system
