Farmers Say 'No', Nurses Say 'Yes'
A group of farmers were protesting outside the Old Royal High School building in Edinburgh today. They were campaigning for a No No vote in September's referendum. The small group of farmers claimed that a parliament with tax-raising powers could harm fragile rural economies and undermine agriculture. Meanwhile, the public service union Unison has announced that it will launch a "Nurses for a Scottish Parliament" campaign. It will also urge its 30,000 members to vote Yes, Yes. Senior regional officer, Jim Devine, commented, "This parliament, which will directly run the Scottish health service, will have an impact on every ward, hospital and health centre in the country. Instead of a centralised, quangoised health service a Scottish parliament will democratise the service." Unison will also offer training and support to any of its members who wish to stand for the parliament.
Scottish movie icon Sean Connery declared his support for a Scottish Parliament in a press conference at the Scottish Screen Edinburgh International Film Festival yesterday. Connery, a supporter of the SNP, was asked how he felt about the referendum on Scottish devolution. He replied, "Well, obviously it's a Yes Yes Yes for me. It's such a fantastic oppotunity it should not be missed. "It has teeth, and in my own opinion it's the next step from independence." An SNP spokesman later confirmed that Mr Connery would contribute to the Yes Yes campaign, details of his paticipation would be announced later in the campaign. |
