Ancram: Central Belt corruption

Speech provokes angry response

The Conservative Constitutional Affairs spokesman, Michael Ancram, has been criticised by the Yes, Yes campaign for remarks made in his speech to a Tory gathering at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen last night.

Ancram claimed that a Scottish parliament would be dominated by the Central Belt and would lead to a "Paisley writ large" situation. "There is and for long has been, the whiff of the manure of corruption and the pork barrel, and of the politics of fear, some of which has recently suppurated through to the surface", he added. Mr. Ancram also invoked the spirit of Winston Churchill in his speech, when warning Scots of the danger he sees in the devolution proposals. The Union would not survive devolution, he believes.

The Devolution Minister, Henry McLeish, responded angrily to the Tory's remarks. He highlighted the fact that the latest attack comes from a Scottish MP representing an English constituency and not from local Tories. "It looks as if the away team is visiting daily to throw insults at the Scots. This is an insult too far", McLeish said.
