Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde in the west of central Scotland. It is the country's largest city and possesses the highest population of any of the regions. Once famous for shipbuilding and heavy industry, the decline of those industries led to a decline in the city's fortunes. At the beginning of the 1990s regeneration schemes brought money into the city and its centre was cleaned up. New jobs have been created in the electronics industry and the service sector but unemployment remains high, especially in the council estates on the outskirts of the city.

The city is a Labour stronghold, there has not been a non-Labour MP since Roy Jenkins of the SDP lost Glasgow Hillhead in 1987. The SNP came second in every seat at the last general election. Labour hold over 90% of the seats on the council, which is currently under investigation by its own party over allegations that councillors traded votes for free trips abroad.
