The Welsh Devolution Debate
15 AUGUST 1997
PETER POPS IN
The Minister Without Portfolio Peter Mandelson joined forces with the pop world
on Friday to endorse the Yes For Wales referendum campaign. He met the Welsh
rock band Stereophonics in Cardiff.
He also criticised the choice of Lord Michael Ancram as the Conservative responsible for constitutional affairs as "an insult to the people of Wales."
ASSEMBLY COST "NO JOKE"
Conservative spokesman Nigel Evans MP said Mr Mandelson had taken on the role
of "referendum comedian." He attacked the cost of creating the Welsh Assembly
and its resulting bureaucracy, saying it would take money away from essential
social services.
SWANSEA NO LAUNCH
The "Just Say No" campaign have been busy with local launches in recent days.
On Friday, they moved on to Wales's second city - Swansea. Dr John Bushell, a
local councillor, said they want to ensure people were informed before they
vote.
