Welsh Office Appoints Professor To Oversee Referendum
Counting Chief For Night Of Drama
A chief counting officer for the referendum on plans for a Welsh Assembly has
been appointed by the Welsh Office.
Former principal of the University of Wales in Bangor, Professor Eric
Sunderland, 67, will oversee the counts and announce the results in Cardiff on
September 18.
The votes will be counted on the night in the 22 Welsh unitary authority
areas - and announced both locally and at a National Count Centre in Cardiff.
The final result is expected to be announced in the early hours of Friday 19th
September at the National Centre which will be based in the Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Assembly "Jobs Magnet"
As the Just Say No Campaign held their latest local launch in Brecon, they raised fears that the Welsh Assembly would mean a drain of jobs from rural Wales - with campaigning organisations gravitating to the Assembly's proposed home in Cardiff.
They cited as an example the recent decision of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to move from Newtown in Powys to the Welsh capital.
Splash of Colour To Yes Campaign
The latest Yes For Wales campaign group was launched in Cardiff Bay on Wednesday, representing Welsh artists. A Yes for Wales sculpture was unveiled and the group say they are planning a series of events to bring a splash of colour to the devolution debate.
