The Welsh Devolution Debate
21 August 1997
Farmers "Would Lose Voice In Europe"
The Just Say No Campaign have raised concerns that Welsh farmers will lose their voice on the European Council of Ministers if the Welsh
Assembly goes ahead.
One farmer, Rob Watkins from Dolau in Powys, said the Assembly was "muddying
the lines of accountability" and farmers would have to rely on an English
Minister at top level meetings in Brussels.
Rugby Stars Make Their Point
Beefing up the Yes For Wales campaign were stars from Welsh rugby champions Pontypridd - including British Lions hero Neil Jenkins - who interrupted a training session to get in touch with devolution issues.
Meanwhile, in Cardiff, health unions launched their Healthworkers Say Yes
group. Jeff Baker, regional official with UNISON, said an Assembly would help
deliver a more accountable NHS.
