The Welsh Devolution Debate
17 September 1997

Final Day of Campaigning

On the final day of campaigning, both sides of the devolution campaign have been claiming that victory is in their sights in tomorrow's referendum. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott was in Newport today. He posed beside a roadsweeper and said he wanted to use it to sweep Tory arguments against change away.

Meanwhile Tory leader William Hague was also in Newport, campaigning in the cattle market just half a mile down the road. Mr Hague met farmers just half-a-mile away at Newport's cattle market and insisted there was "all to play for".

But bookmakers are putting their money on a Welsh Assembly. William Hill quoted 5/1 on for a Yes result, with No quoted at 3/1. end
