Area (Hectares): 28,500

Bridgend is a county council in a part of South Wales made up of a mixture of agricultural and industrial areas. Bridgend itself is an important commercial, shopping and market centre and the Ogmore Valley is dotted with small towns and villages, many of which grew up round collieries which have now closed down. The M4 passes along the south of the county.

Bridgend is an overwhelmingly Labour voting area; the Labour party holds 44 of the 48 seats on the council. The unitary authority comprises part of the constituencies of Bridgend and Ogmore which had Labour majorities of 15,248 and 24,447 respectively in the 1997 general election. Ray Powell, MP for Ogmore has expressed doubts about the use of proportional representation for elections to the proposed assembly.
