GwyneddElectorate: 91,553Area (Hectares): Gwynedd encompasses Snowdonia National Park and a long stretch of coast from Tywyn in the south to Caernarfon in the north. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The village of Tryweryn, flooded to make a reservoir to serve Liverpool in the 1960s was in Gwynedd. The Welsh language is at its strongest here and discontent with rule from Westminster is high. In the old district council areas of Arfon, Dwyfor and Meiryionnydd, the 1991 census found that 74.6%, 75.4% and 65.4% of the respective populations were Welsh speaking. This is the homeland of Plaid Cymru, two of their four MPs have seats here, Dafydd Wigley, leader of the parliamentary party represents Caernarfon and Elfyn Lloyd is the MP for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy. Plaid controls the council, with 46 of its 83 seats. The third seat within Gwynedd is Conwy, a seat that the Conservatives lost to Labour in the 1997 election.
Results of 1979 referendum:The 1979 referendum was counted along the boundaries of the eight county councils. Gwynedd formed part of Gwynedd county council.
Beaufort Research/Western Mail poll published on 2 July 1997:Respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed that there should be a Welsh Assembly along the lines proposed by the government. Those who said that they didn't know were asked what would be their most likely response if they had to make a decision.
