Neath Port Talbot

Area (Hectares): 44,000

Neath Port Talbot is still a heavily industrial area. There are steel works at Port Talbot and the open cast mine at Glynneath is Europe's largest. Neath, Port Talbot and Pontardwe are the main towns, the Vale of Neath is promoted as a tourist destination.

This is a solidly Labour area, John Morris, Secretary of State for Wales during the referendum of 1979 has represented Aberavon since 1959 and it is the fomer seat of Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. Neath is the other parliamentary seat in the area, it was won by Peter Hain with a majority of 26,741 in 1997. 51 of the 64 seats on the council are currently held by Labour.

The 1979 referendum was counted along the boundaries of the eight county councils. Neath Port Talbot formed part of West Glamorgan county council.
