Pembrokeshire

Electorate: 87, 907
Area (Hectares): 158, 807

Pembrokeshire is situated at the south western tip of Wales. The region is mostly rural, agriculture and tourism are both important to the local economy. A large proportion of the coastline forms Britain's only coastal National Park, and the seaside resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot also attract tourists to the area. The other principal employer is the oil industry, Milford Haven is a major oil port and there are a number of oil refinaries based nearby. Other towns in the region include Pembroke, Haverfordwest, and the ferry ports of Fishguard and Pembroke Dock. Pembrokeshire is known as the "Little England Beyond Wales". This is partly because of the large number of English people who have retired to the area around Tenby and partly because the proportion of Welsh speakers is only 16.3% (this drops to 8.2% in South Pembrokeshire) compared to the 58% of people who speak Welsh in nearby Carmarthen.

Both the parliamentary constituencies in Pembrokeshire are Conservative/Labour marginals which Labour won in the 1997 election. The council is made up mostly of Independents; 39 of the 60 councillors have no political affiliation, though those from rural areas may have conservative sympathies.
