Ynys MonElectorate: 52, 771Area (Hectares): 71, 511 Ynys Mon, the Welsh name for the Isle of Anglesey, is situated just across the Menai Straights off the coast of North Wales. Its largest town is Holyhead, a major ferry port for travellers to Ireland. The island is mostly rural in character, agriculture and tourism are the main employers. Unemployment here is the highest in Wales at 14%. Levels of Welsh speaking are high at 62% of its population. The parliamentary seat of Ynys Mon is currently held by Plaid Cymru, but it has been held by all of the four main parties at various times since 1945. Local politics are dominated by Independents, who hold all but a handful of seats on the council. Only half of the seats were actually contested at the 1995 local elections.
Results of 1979 referendum:The 1979 referendum was counted along the boundaries of the eight county councils. Ynys Mon formed part of Gwynedd county council.
Beaufort Research/Western Mail poll published on 2 July 1997:Respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed that there should be a Welsh Assembly along the lines proposed by the government. Those who said that they didn't know were asked what would be their most likely response if they had to make a decision.
