Britain Pauses To Remember

Plans of some organisations to mark the day:

Retailers

Asda - closed until 2pm.
B&Q - closed until 2pm.
Co-op - closed until 2pm.
Harrods - closed all day.
McDonald's - closed until 2pm.
Marks & Spencer UK stores - closed until 2pm.
Marks & Spencer overseas stores - observing two-minute silence at 11am UK time. Stores closed at that time will open five minutes later than usual.
Morrisons supermarket stores - closed until 2pm.
Morrisons petrol stations - closed between 10.30am and 1pm.
Safeway (including its Presto stores in the NorthEast and Scotland) - closed until 2pm.
Sainsbury's (including Savacentre superstores and petrol stations) - closed until 2pm. Stores that open throughout the night on Fridays will close at midnight.
Selfridges - closed until 1pm, making a donation from the day's takings to one of the Princess's favourite charities.
Somerfield - closed until 2pm, donating £100,000 to British Red Cross Landmine Victims Appeal.
Tesco - closed until 2pm.
Tower Records - closed until 2pm.
Toys"R"Us - closed until 2pm.

Other retailers staying closed for part of the day include: branches of Argos, Boots, Burtons, David Morgan, Dixons, Freemans, John Lewis Partnership, Kingfisher, Kwik Save, Next, Storehouse.

Banks and Building Societies

Abbey National - closed.
Barclays - closed.
Bradford & Bingley - closed from 10.30am rather than their normal time of noon.
Co-operative Bank - closed.
Nationwide branches- closed. Telephone banking operations closed except for its emergency numbers for lost or stolen cards.
Royal Bank of Scotland - closed.
The Woolwich's bank branches - closed all day. Woolwich Property Services 150 branches - closed until 2pm.
Yorkshire Bank branches - closed all day.

Building Societies Association - most members closed.

Transport

British Airways - two-minute silence on all flights and at check-in desks world-wide at 11am British time. Travel shops - closed all day.
Civil Aviation Authority - air traffic routed away from London during the funeral.
Going Places travel agents - closed all weekend.
Heathrow airport - Two-minute silence.
Hoverspeed - Two minute suspension of operations and silence.
London Underground - staff will wear black ties or black armbands.
Westminster station - shut because of fears of overcrowding.
National Express coach company - Two-minute silence at 11am at all stations.
P&O European Ferries - flags at half-mast until the end of the funeral.
Railtrack mainline stations - Two-minute silence. Flags at half-mast at stations until after the funeral.
Stena ferry company - two-minute silence at 11am on Saturday on all ships and its reservations office at Ashford in Kent. Flags at half-mast.
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express - UK service cancelled.

Entertainment

ABC cinemas - no films until 2pm.
Air Day Wales, featuring the RAF Red Arrows and other aerobatic teams - cancelled.
Art at Wyndham's Theatre in Charing Cross Road - donating all proceeds to the Halo Trust landmine charity.
Bookmakers - closed all day.
Chris Evans - first show of his new TFI Friday television series cancelled. Disney's Beauty and The Beast - matinee performance in London cancelled.
Legoland theme park in Windsor, Berkshire - closed until 1pm.
The National Lottery draw - postponed until Sunday. Draw will not be televised.
Primal Scream and Mercury Music Prize winner Roni Size concert scheduled to take place in a tent in Victoria Park, east London, on Friday and Saturday - postponed.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, matinee shows featuring his music, including Starlight Express and Jesus Christ Superstar - cancelled.
Sir Cameron Mackintosh, all London matinee performances of his shows including Miss Saigon (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty's Theatre), Cats (New London Theatre), Oliver! (London Palladium) and Martin Guerre (Prince Edward Theatre) - cancelled. Evening performances - one minute silence.
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre - matinee performance of The Winter's Tale cancelled.
Society of London Theatre members - one minute silence before performances.
Thorpe Park - closed all day.
United International Pictures film That Old Feeling, a romantic comedy featuring a paparazzi photographer - postponed launch.
Wet Wet Wet's concert at Celtic Park, Glasgow - rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday, September 7.

Kylie Minogue has dropped plans to call her forthcoming album Impossible Princess. It will now simply be called Kylie Minogue.

Mercedes has halted its advertising campaigns until after the funeral.

The auction of the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's possessions has been postponed indefinitely. The sale was due to have taken place at Sotheby's in New York from September 11 to September 19.

Weight Watchers International in the US is attempting to halt an advertising campaign featuring the Duchess of York. It features her smiling at the camera with the caption: "It's harder than outrunning the paparazzi".
