To the star which lit our way: Diana, Princess of Wales. by Stephen Bartlet-Jones (17), Wilson's School, Wallington, London Borough of Sutton. The clouds descend, the sun withdraws, Misery muzzles her rays, The canaille's canon in virtuous wars In her own warmth decays. Your relations of rock and gaseous kin, Left you floating through space ignored: But twas you, not your peers, around whom all did spin; It was you whom the people adored. You roused the remnants of remorse, In forests razed by sin, Till gorgeous blossoms outshone gorse: A war you waged, youd win. And yet the warmth which washed the earth Burnt within its crust: And rendered this star of inestimable worth Impotent, impoverished dust. Your name and fame, if not your flesh, Will ever drive your cause; Benevolence will not die with death, And nor will our applause. You have escaped the endless hunt, And all you did endure; We loved you: quem di diligunt adolescens moritur.
