New PM Won't Live At No 10

The new Prime Minister and his family will not live in the flat above No 10 Downing Street, but they might decide to live next door at No 11.

After inspecting the famous property the Blairs, who have three children, confirmed that it was too small for family living. The new first family may prefer No 11, traditionally the home of the Chancellor and a considerably more spacious property. This would mean a house swap for the newly appointed Chancellor, Gordon Brown.

Another important, but less well known but address is No 12, traditionally the home of the Chief Whip. Tony Blair has just appointed Nick Brown to this position.

If nothing on Downing Street fits the bill then the Blairs have can choose from a number of properties throughout central London .

Mr Blair would not be the first Prime Minister to shun the traditional residence. Harold Wilson was another premier who chose not to live "above the shop" as he called it, preferring another location nearby.
