Britain's First Lady Goes Back To Work

Cherie Blair went back to her job today, appearing as Cherie Booth QC before three Court of Appeal judges at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

In her first court appearance since the election, she is acting for St Helens Metropolitan Council in a case brought by an employee of a special school.

Court security staff had been told that she was on the way, but there were no outward signs of any extra security.

The press bench in the court room was packed with journalists keen to see her in action. She greeted them with a smile and said " Good morning - I'm glad to see that you're so keen to learn about employment law."

As the wife of the leader of the opposition, she managed to carry out her £200,000 a year job without attracting too much media attention.

Now her husband is Prime Minister there has been speculation about whether she will be able to continue her practice at the bar because of security problems.

She has made it plain that she will carry on her work and is booked to sit for two weeks as an Assistant Recorder - a junior judge - at the Mayor's and City of London County Court, dealing with personal injury and breach of contract claims.
