Salmond: SNP is Scotland's second party

We're The Scottish Opposition Says SNP

The Scottish Nationalist Party are the real opposition to Labour in Scotland, according to the party's leader Alex Salmond.

As he welcomed his two new MPs to Westminster, Mr Salmond said, "It is the SNP who are the real opposition to Labour in Scotland. We are the clear second force in Scottish politics, with nearly a quarter of the share of the vote - the second largest in Scotland.

"The SNP have made advances in terms of seats and votes, making the 1997 General Election one of the most successful ever.

"The Tories no longer hold a seat in Scotland and the Lib Dems fell back into fourth place in their share of the vote. During the election we pressed new Labour hard and we will continue to do so.

"We are the main challengers to Labour in 43 constituencies and in two key central belt seats where we challenged new Labour - Ochil and Govan - there was a swing to the SNP from Labour, despite the general UK surge."

He was joined by new MPs John Swinney (North Tayside) and Alasdair Morgan (Galloway and Upper Nithsdale) for a rally of the party faithful.
