News In Brief

The British Medical Association has reacted angrily to unconfirmed reports that the government may delay plans to ban tobacco advertising. The reports suggest that the ban will not form part of the government's first wave of legislation. "There can be no possible reason for a delay in banning cigarette advertising," said the BMA Chairman, Dr Sandy Macara. He added: "I have to say that the credibility of the new Government's very welcome commitment to public health will be seriously undermined in the eyes of doctors and the public if it does not stand firm on this issue."

Alan Clark, the former Conservative Cabinet minister has returned to the Commons after an absence of five years, having stepped down at the 1992 election. He swore the oath as the MP for Kensington and Chelsea, the former seat of Sir Nicholas Scott, who was deselected by his constituency association before the General Election and replaced by Mr Clark.

Labour's Stephen Twigg has been sworn in as the MP for Enfield Southgate, where he defeated leading Conservative right-winger and former Defence Secretary Michael Portillo. Mr Twigg is one of three openly gay MPs, the others being National Heritage Secretary Chris Smith, who was sworn in on Wednesday, and Ben Bradshaw, Labour MP for Exeter, who was sworn in yesterday.
