Clinton to visit London
In an early boost for the new Labour government's relationship with the United States, President Clinton will briefly visit London at the end of May.
The White House spokesman, Mike McCurry, said that the President "has accepted an invitation to stop in London and meet with newly-elected British Prime Minister Tony Blair". It will be the first meeting between the two since Mr Blair took office and the President's first visit to the UK in nearly two years.
President Clinton was the first foreign leader to congratulate Mr Blair on his victory. While the Prime Minister was on his way to Labour's victory party at the Royal Festival Hall, he received a call from the President on his car phone.
The President is attending a US-European summit in The Netherlands on 28 May. He will also be present at commemoration ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild Europe following the Second World War. His aides say it is not yet clear whether he will stop in London on his way to the Netherlands or on the way back to Washington.
