Michael Heseltine: resting comfortably

Heseltine Recovering After Operation

The former Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Heseltine, admitted to hospital last weekend with heart trouble, is recovering after undergoing a successful operation to treat narrowed arteries.

He underwent an angioplasty - which involves inserting a balloon into the narrowed artery to stretch it - at the Harley Street Clinic in London yesterday.

"He is resting comfortably and hopes to go home in a few days," said the Tory chairman Dr Brian Mawhinney in a brief statement.

Mr Heseltine, 64, was the bookies' favourite when dropped out of the Tory leadership battle after he was taken to hospital on Saturday suffering from chest pains.

He underwent routine tests for angina, which is caused by a narrowing of the arteries and can be brought on by acute anxiety, strenuous exercise and excitement.

He was later transferred to the Harley Street Clinic where the operation was carried out.

Mr Heseltine, then Board of Trade President, suffered a heart attack while holidaying in Venice in 1993, but he insisted it was merely a minor attack from which he had fully recovered.

He went on to become Deputy Prime Minister, and he played a leading role in the gruelling six-week general election campaign.

Mr Heseltine kept his Henley seat last Thursday, although it with a majority reduced by some 7,800 votes.
