Michael Heseltine Leaves Hospital

Former Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine, admitted to hospital last weekend with heart trouble, has left the Harley Street Clinic after a successful operation to treat narrowed arteries, hospital staff said today.

Mr Heseltine was the bookmakers' favourite when he dropped out of the Tory leadership battle after he was taken to hospital last Saturday suffering from chest pains.

He underwent routine tests for angina, which is caused by a narrowing of the arteries and can be brought on by acute anxiety, strenuous exercise and excitement.

Mr Heseltine was later transferred from hospital in Banbury, Oxon, to the Harley Street Clinic where the operation was carried out.

He suffered a heart attack while Board of Trade President during a holiday in Venice in 1993, but insisted it was merely a minor attack from which he had fully recovered. He returned to work within a week.

Mr Heseltine went on to become Deputy Prime Minister and played a leading role in the gruelling six-week general election campaign which saw Labour sweep to power.

He kept his Henley seat, though with a majority reduced by some 7,800 votes.
