Howard Under Attack by Former Minister

Tory leadership contender Michael Howard has been accused of being "dangerous stuff" by one of his former ministers.

Ann Widdecombe worked under the former Home Secretary for two years and fell out with him over the sacking of Derek Lewis as prison service director.

Now Ms Widdecombe has told friends that she believes that Mr Howard, one of the front runners in the Conservative leadership contest, has "something of the night" in his personality.

But Mr Howard, speaking on Breakfast with Frost said that although he and Ms Widdecombe had clashed over the Lewis dismissal he hoped she would not go ahead with her avowed intention to write to Mr Major.

Ann Widdecombe is said to be backing Peter Lilley in the election contest.

Back to First Principles

Meanwhile, the Tory Maverick Alan Clark said whoever wins the leadersip election should contemplate wholesale changes to the Conservative approach, including some form of independence for Scotland and Wales.

Speaking on GMTV Mr Clark, the Kensington and Chelsea MP said:" We have been comprehensively rejected and that means you to comprehensively rethink and the manifesto is down the plug really."
