International Development Minister Clare Short has announced a £100,000 initial contribution from Britain to help with the relief work in Iran where an earthquake has killed over 2000 people. Ms Short said the money will go to Red Cresent, the Iranian arm of the Red Cross and stressed that she would seek to avoid the problem od un-coordinated relief and study the country's real needs.
Labour has signalledthat it intends to start work on a housebuilding programme. A Bill to allow the release of £5 billion raised from the sale of council houses and currently held by local authorities, will be one of the first measures to come before the new Parliament. The money will be used to finance new homes for the homeless and the renovation of run-down estates.The programme will be carried in conjunction with local councils and housing associations. The housing Bill is among 22 pieces of legislation to be announced on Wednesday, in the first Queen's Speech by the new Government.
