New Labour MPs Get Lessons
New Labour MPs have been given advice on how to do their jobs at a special seminar in Westminster. Deputy leader, John Prescott, has told the fresh faces to start working today for success in the next general election.
The new MPs were all given red box folders full of practical information, with one of the documents distributed entitled "Winning 2001". The advice included tips on fundraising, accessing the local media, how often and where to hold surgeries and how to gather new members of the party.
It was the first of a series of gatherings aimed at drilling into MPs the
importance of retaining links with their constituency and getting organised
within four years for another Labour victory.
"We have got to get the organisation right and deliver on the promises we
give. It is still the politics of organisation and the politics of ideas that
will deliver that victory," Mr Prescott said.
National Heritage Secretary Chris Smith gave the new MPs his "22 top tips" on how to increase your Commons majority. He also stressed the importance of the "corporate identity" of Labour.
"Everyone here must remember they are only here because of the Labour Party.
There are no independent MPs here. They are here because of the Labour Party,"
he said.
More sessions will take place over the coming year to help keep the new MPs on their toes.
