The Conservatives have a new Communications Director

Former BBC "Today" journalist named as Tory Director of Communications

Francis Halewood, former Deputy Editor of the BBC's Today Programme, has been named as the new Director of Communications of the Tory Party.

Mr Halewood succeeds Charles Lewington, the former political editor of the Sunday Express, who resigned shortly after the Conservatives' election defeat.

Mr Halewood worked for the BBC for eighteen years in radio current affairs programmes.

He resigned last Christmas, and soon afterwards became the operations manager at Conservative Central Office, working as Mr Lewington's deputy.

The post is regarded as permanent although party officials recognise the new leader, when elected, might wish to make changes in the structure at Conservative Central Office.

Mr Halewood, who was born in England, lived in New Zealand from the age of three, until he was twenty six. He returned to the country for a short while in the 1970s, but since then has lived in the UK.
