Mowlam: First american visit

Northern Ireland Secretary in US to explain plans for revived peace process

The Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam is in the United States explaining how the Government is planning to revive the peace process. She said any help in moving the peace process forward, and encouraging a new IRA ceasefire would be welcome.

Last night she met members of Congress, and later today she'll have talks with senior Democratic senators as well as with President Clinton's national security advisor, Sandy Berger.

Prospects for the visit look good, and she's expected to get a warmer reception than any of her recent predecessors. Even fierce critics of the Government are now optimistic.

Congressman King: Positive emphasis needed
Republican Congressman Peter King said what was needed was confidence- building on both sides, hopefully sooner rather than later, and for a positive a positive emphasis on things. He added that in his view, the new government had started well, saying, "What Tony Blair has done in the past two weeks is more than John Major and Patrick Mayhew did in the previous two years.

Whilst Ms Mowlam's visit to Washington is seen as something of a formality, it's hoped that it will foreshadow a summer of achievement in the Northern Ireland negotiations as the Americans begin fresh direct contact with all the parties involved.
