Britain has more than 100 cars to every mile of highway compared with an
European average of around 70 to the mile
- There are about 25 million cars in use on UK roads. In 1980 the figure was
15.4 million, in 1970 it was 11.8 million and in 1960 it was just 5.6 million
- Britain's roads also have to accommodate more than three million commercial vehicles
- 94% of passenger miles are travelled by road
- 92% of inland freight tonnage is moved by road
- The average person makes about 20 journeys each week, of which 12 are by
car or taxi, six are on foot, bicycle or motorcycle, one by bus and one by
train
- 92% of business journeys are made by car or taxi and only 3% are made on
foot or bike
- More than half the journeys to work are made in private cars
- About 95% of the money UK households spend on passenger transport goes on
road transport
- The UK has one car for every 2.3 people - the same as the average EU figure. But the European figure including those countries not in the EU is 4.1 people for every car.
