Single Mothers won't lose benefits

Downing street denies compulsory job interviews for single mothers

The Prime minister is expected to outline a number of new initiative on Monday, including measures to deal with single parents. However, Downing street is denying reports that they will include forcing single mothers to attend job interviews, saying that they will be offered help to get back to work, but won't lose benefits if they stay at home.

A downing street spokesman said " Our surveys show that nine out of ten single parents want to work. This is designed to help them put together work, childcare, education, and training packages.

Blair: Article in Mail on Sunday

Change of values needed

Writing in the Mail on Sunday Mr Blair gives a flavour of the speech he will deliver to an invited audience on Monday. He says he has a desire to give back to the British people the "will to win," and that everyone must " face up toe their responsibilities" in the drive to build a one nation country of opportunity for all.

He said " It is not enough just to change government. There must be a change of values in our country too. The government will do its bit to promote opportunity for all, to provide jobs and training for young people, to tackle crime and its causes, but it will do so more easily when there is a genuine understanding of why tough decisions have to be made.

Need to replace dependency with independence

Welfare reform was one of the subjects the Prime Minister discussed with the American President Bill Clinton earlier in the week. Mr Blair said he had reached a remarkable level of understanding with President Clinton about education, small business and international co-operation. " We agreed that it falls to our generation to modernise the welfare state, to replace dependency with independence.
