Bank:New committee members

The Chancellor Gordon Brown has named the four outside members of the Bank of England who will decide interest rate movements. They are :
  • Sir Alan Budd, Chief economic advisor to the treasury since 1991
  • Professor Willem Buiter of Cambridge University
  • The Chief economist at British Airways Dr Diane Julius
  • Charles Goodhart of the London School of Economics

The Monetary Policy Committee meets for the first time on Friday amid speculations that it will raise interest rates. The Bank is concerned about increasing consumer spending, fuelled by building society share windfalls.
