Dobson: "everything is on the agenda"

Nothing Ruled Out in Health Review

The Health Secretary Frank Dobson has ruled nothing out as a new review of NHS spending gets underway.

After addressing a conference of NHS Managers in Cardiff Mr Dobson told journalists that, "everything is on the agenda for the review, we've got to look at every aspect of health care."

The spending review comes as the NHS faces a budget deficiet of £300 million pounds. The options available to the Health Secretary which might help bridge the hole in the budget include prescription charges for some pensioners, charges for GP home visits as well as charging for food in hospitals.

If any of proposals are taken on board by the Government it will amount to a massive U-turn in traditional Labour policies towards the NHS. That many of these new charges are on the agenda is a sign that Labour is serious about its pre-election commitment to keep public spending within the limits st down by the previous government.
