Britain Poised for Deal on Fishing

Britain and the EU appear to have solved a dispute over fishing rights.

On the second day of the European Union summit in Amsterdam, tsources indicated that an agreement was 'in the bag'.

Officials said that progress could be made on measures "straight away" in spite of Spanish claims that they would not agree to a deal.

Part of the agreement has involved British assurances that details will only be unveiled tomorrow in the House of Commons by the Prime Minister

It is understood they revolve around the three key British demands:

  1. That British fishermen would form part of the crew of foreign trawlers fishing British quota and that part of the catches are landed in British ports to boost local fishing communities' economies.
  2. That the European Commission enforce fisheries laws on boats that break Common Fisheries Policy rules.
  3. That Britain's 12-mile limit be protected.
