The company behind the "chill cans"

"Chill Cans" Spark Heated Debate

Scientists fear new self-cooling "chill cans" could wreck international attempts to curb global warming and disastrous climate change.
  • The revolutionary can invented by the Joseph Company in California eliminates the need for refrigerators and ice, providing instant refreshment in any conditions.
  • When a button on the base is pressed a special cooling gas is released reducing the temperature by 30 degrees Farenheit in less than two minutes.
  • The cans are on show at the industry's annual exhibition in Singapore.
  • The powerful HFC 134a gas used is up to 3,400 times as polluting as carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas and mostly produced by industry and exhaust fumes.
  • Politicians and the scientific community fear the worldwide sale of millions of "chill cans" will wreck attempts to slow down the rate at which harmful gases are creating an imbalance in the atmosphere.
  • Ironically, the gas was developed to replace CFCs (chloroflurocarbons). These are used in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment but are creating a hole in the fragile ozone layer which prevents the sun's cancer causing ultra violet rays reaching the earth.
  • The "chill can" gases are intended to replace CFCs for use in sealed systems, like fridges, where it does not escape to the atmosphere.
