Clinton: set to follow Blair

Clinton to Give Boost to Solar Power

President Clinton is expected to announce a major boost for the solar power business when he makes a keynote address to world leaders at the Earth Summit in New York.

The move will be welcomed by green campaigners as a sign that the United States is taking notice of dire scientific warnings of a climate change disaster unless the big polluters slow down traffic fumes and industrial greenhouse gases tht are being poured into the atmosphere.

President Clinton's iniative follows Prime Minister Tony Blair's appeal to other countries at the summit on Monday to follow Britain's lead and aim to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2010.

Environmentalists claim the Earth Summit has still not done enought to tackle global warming
The President is believed to want a huge expansion in the use of solar panels fitted onto millions of roofs to harness the power of the sun for heating and power. By persuading Americans to use the sun's energy instead of burning coal, gas and oil, the President will go some way to encouraging Third World countries to use environmentally friendly technology in the race to develop their economies.

Dr Jeremy Leggett, former Greenpeace director of Science and Chief Executive of The Solar Century, said "This is fantastic news for the solar market both domestically in the United States and environmentally. I am confident that it is just a matter of time before we come up with an initiative in the UK, given that Tony Blair is committed to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions which the Americans have yet to do."
