Aitken Back in Britain: Report

Jonathan Aitken, the disgraced former minister and Privy Counsellor, is reported to have returned to Britain following the collapse of his libel case against The Guardian newspaper and the World in Action television programme.

It's expected that Mr Aitken will be questioned by police officers from Scotland Yard. The police were called in after The Guardian and Granada Television made a formal complaint. Officers from the specialist operations unit are handling the investigation.

According to The Express newspaper, he is staying with his mother, Lady Aitken, at her home in Westminster. Lady Aitken, however, denied the report. She said: "I've not seen him - he's not staying here. I haven't seen him recently at all."

Mr Aitken went abroad last month to avoid the eyes of the press following the dramatic collapse of his case. There were conflicting reports about his destination: some said that he headed to America, to begin a book about the case, while others said that he travelled to France with his son William.

Mr Aitken has been landed with a legal bill of approximately 2 million pounds. The pressure of the case also caused him to split with his wife Lolicia. He has not made any public statements since the court case ended.
