Mobile Phones:Campaign to raise awareness

No New Laws on Mobile Phones
The Government has announced that there will be no new legislation to clamp down on drivers who use mobile phones at the wheel.
Home Office Minister of State Alun Michael stated in a Commons written reply
that the Government and the Association of Chief Police Officers felt the
existing laws were tough enough. Under present rules, police can prosecute or issue fixed penalty notices to drivers who do not exercise proper control of their vehicles.

Mobile phone users can also be prosecuted for careless or dangerous driving,
Mr Michael said. "The Government and the Association of Chief Police
Officers consider the existing powers in road traffic legislation enable the
police to deal properly with enforcement issues arising from the use of mobile
phones when driving."
But he added that the Department of Environment, Transport and the
Regions was considering measures to raise public awareness of the dangers of
using mobile phones whilst driving.
The Government had been considering measured to curb drivers using mobile phones after a driver was killed in an accident caused by someone driving whilst making a call.
