News In Brief

Former MP Jonathan Aitken is reported to have left San Francisco on his way home. News of his imminent return came as his wife Lolicia told the Mail on Sunday that she was standing by him. The newspaper said her husband, not seen since the collapse of his libel action againstThe Guardian last month, was set to come home on Sunday. His wife is quoted as saying: "I'm not going to tell you whether Jonathan and I are separating. We might."

Diana, Princess of Wales has been criticised over her reported holiday arrangements by Conservative MP, Teresa Gorman. The Princess is said to be relaxing in St Tropez on board a yacht owned by Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed. "I don't think it was very sensible of her go aboard this yacht because this man is quite clearly a controversial figure," said Mrs Gorman.

A Bill to ban the "menace" of mobile phones in restaurants, railway carriages, buses and "other designated places" will be introduced later in July. Its sponsor, Tory MP Michael Fabricant, says he is determined to end the intrusive nature of mobile phones in many public places. "It is the height of rudeness when people accept calls in the middle of a meal in a restaurant and start barking down their phones. It is a strange thing that as soon as people start talking into mobile phones they seem compelled to speak at three times the volume of normal conversations."
