Sarwar Resigns from Council

Mohammed Sarwar, the Labour MP suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party following an internal investigation into bribery allegations during the election, has resigned from his council seat in Glasgow.

He told Glasgow's Evening Times newspaper: "It was always my intention to resign as a councillor after being elected as an MP, but it has been a great privilege to serve Pollokshields East. I wish every success to the council in future and hope the Scottish Office gives more resources to a thriving city."

Mr Sarwar was suspended from the Parliamentary Party after being accused of bribing rival candidate Islam Badar with £5,000 to tone down his campaign. He maintains that handed over the cash, but as a gift, not a bribe. Police are carrying out an investigation into the matter.

Mr Sarwar is taking legal action against the News of the World for publishing the allegations.
